A short analysis of a French reading GCSE paper


This is a sample of the vocabulary that appears regularly in reading higher tier GCSE papers. It may be of help if you are a student who is about to take your reading paper next week!. To download the past paper click here.

apprendre: to learn....apprennent : (they) learn
les timbres: stamps
parlant (x2) : who speak /speaking
de tous pays: from all countries
la BD : la bande dessinée, comics
J'attends vos lettres: I'm waiting for your letters.....attendre: to wait for

Parent-child relationship
Je me demande = I wonder
il y a trois ans = 3 years ago
se faire du souci = to worry
je sais = I know.....on ne sait pas que penser = we don't know what to think
gaver = to force-feed
couper l'appétit = to spoil somebody's appetite

Friendship
l'amitié : friendship
en train de jouer au basket..in the middle of playing basket ball
Cela ne fait pas longtemps que Selim est dans sa classe: Selim has not been in her class for long.
Elle se rappelle..she remembers

Divorce
In this question, there is a subjonctive after quoique (spelt wrong in the paper, quoi que)
quoique tu choisisses..In my view, it reads better if you write...quel que soit ton choix (whatever your choice)
en vivant chez ton père...by living at your dad's
Another subjonctive...il faut qu'ils sachent...(savoir - to know) they must know...
en réfléchissant = if you think about it
il vaut mieux = it is better
une épreuve..a trial
mûr : mature
je n'aime pas les entendre crier : I don't like to hear them shout
A difficult phrase to translate : s'il leur arrivait de divorcer .. if they did divorce
Il m'arrive de faire la sieste : at times I have a nap in the afternoon

Transport
Pour huit euros par mois: le bus à volonté pour vos loisirs
cette publicité: this advertisement
le trimestre : the term  hence 'une carte trimestrielle'
à volonté: whenever you wish
c'est surtout pour les jeunes qui..it is above all for the youngsters who..
il faut avoir moins de 17 ans: you must be under 17 y.o.
les jours fériés: bank holidays

Brevet de mob
Remember that 'passer un examen' = to take an exam
and 'réussir' =  to pass

Use of pronouns
Je vous ai écrit....
je peux venir vous voir
ne dites pas que vous m'avez vu!
Je vous attends demain
Ils vont me dire..
Nous souhaitions vous proposer un rendez-vous...
